How to evaluate a research peptide supplier
Nine checks you can run from the outside, in about ten minutes, without taking anyone’s word for anything.
Every supplier in this category says the same four things: high purity, third-party tested, US stock, fast shipping. The claims are indistinguishable, which makes them useless for choosing between suppliers. What separates them is whether the claims are checkable — and most of the checks take a minute each from a browser.
1. Is the testing laboratory named?
“Third-party tested” without a laboratory name is not a verifiable claim. A named laboratory can be looked up; an unnamed one cannot, and an internal QC sheet reformatted to look like a certificate is indistinguishable from the outside.
2. Can you read a certificate before buying?
Certificates available only after purchase, or only on request, have been through a selection step. Certificates published against every listed lot before it goes on sale have not. This is the single largest difference between suppliers in this category and it costs nothing to check.
3. Does the lot number on the certificate exist on the vial?
A certificate that cannot be matched to the vial in your hand is decorative. The lot identifier should appear on the label, on the packing slip, and on the document — the same string in all three places.
4. Is the purity figure qualified?
“≥99%” is incomplete. Purity by what method, at what wavelength? RP-HPLC at 214 nm and at 220 nm are different measurements. A specification that omits the method has omitted the part that makes it a specification.
5. Is there a full panel, or only purity?
Purity alone leaves identity, endotoxin, heavy metals and water content unaddressed. Identity by mass spectrometry is the one that confirms the vial contains the compound named rather than something else of similar purity.
6. What happens to certificates after a lot sells out?
Certificates that disappear when stock does make it impossible to check material you already hold. A supplier confident in its documentation has no reason to take it down, and every reason to leave it up.
7. Does the site describe the material's application honestly?
A research-use supplier that also describes what a compound does in a person is not operating an RUO supply chain, whatever the vial says. Beyond the compliance question, it tells you what the business actually is and who it is selling to.
8. Are storage and handling stated specifically?
Specific temperatures and working lives, per presentation, indicate a supplier that handles material rather than drop-ships it. Vague guidance — “store in a cool dry place” — indicates the opposite.
9. Is the shipping origin real?
“Ships from US stock” is checkable against actual delivery times and the tracking origin. A supplier holding domestic inventory can quote a dispatch cut-off and meet it; one drop-shipping internationally cannot, whatever the homepage says.
None of these require trusting the supplier. Each is either visible on the site or verifiable after one order, and a supplier failing several of them is telling you something before you have spent anything.
