Bacteriostatic water versus sterile water
One contains a preservative and one does not, and that single difference decides whether a reconstituted vial survives more than one working session.
Lyophilized peptide has to go back into solution before it can be worked with, and the choice of solvent is usually between sterile water and bacteriostatic water. They are not interchangeable, and the difference is one ingredient.
The difference
Sterile water is water that has been sterilised and contains nothing else. Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth rather than killing outright — hence bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal. The distinction matters at the moment the seal is first broken.

Why the preservative decides the vial's working life
A sterile-water vial is sterile until it is opened. From the first withdrawal onward there is nothing preventing organisms introduced at the septum from multiplying in a nutrient-rich peptide solution held at refrigerator temperature. That constrains a reconstituted preparation to a single session. Benzyl alcohol suppresses that growth, which is what makes repeated withdrawals from one vial defensible over a period of weeks rather than hours.
Storage still governs stability independently of the preservative. Sealed lyophilized powder belongs at −20 °C; once in solution, 2–8 °C and away from light, with the working life measured in weeks not months. The preservative addresses contamination, not chemical degradation — a preserved solution left at room temperature will still degrade on schedule.
When bacteriostatic water is the wrong choice
Benzyl alcohol is not inert to every application. It absorbs in the UV range used by some analytical methods and can interfere with assays sensitive to organic solvents or to preservatives generally. Where a preparation is destined for an analytical measurement rather than storage, the preservative is a variable you have deliberately introduced, and sterile water or a defined buffer is usually the better solvent.
Some peptides call for a mildly acidic solvent — dilute acetic acid — for initial solubilisation before dilution. Solubility is compound-specific, and the certificate and specification sheet are where to check it rather than a general rule.
